The Elm City Party Bike, a small business on wheels, is getting a lot of support from other businesses in New Haven. It arrived in in March and went public for the Saint Patrick’s Day parade, since then its owners have been booking dozens of two hour tours around the city. For 30-dollars you hop on board and pick your music and go…you get a work out peddling it. The idea is to go to lots of restaurants and pubs in town, also you can book it for private parties, it carries up to 15 at a time. The owners are Colin Caplan and Christian Bruckhart. The Elm City Party Bike is the first of its kind in New England. If all goes well, there could be a fleet of them on the street in New Haven.

There’s a pretty new kid on the pizza block in New Haven, Connecticut. One-six-three, The Pizza Joint, in the East Rock section of town… dared to enter into a city where some of the nation’s most famous pies exist. This small business, opened in February of 2016, is owned by a young engaged couple who will marry this October. Andrew Holmes and Alexa Flagge who grew up in Connecticut, work together up to 80 hours a week cranking out their wood-fired artisan pizzas. The B-Y-O-B establishment also serves desserts which include “fried Oreos” and “pig candy”…which is smoked bacon candied with their house made spiced sugar rub.

In May of 2017, I got to spend some time with the first lady of TV daytime talk, Sally Jessy Raphael. Sally preceded Oprah by about three years. She brought her show to WTNH in June of 1987. I came to the station six months prior, so I got to see her nationally syndicated show from start to finish three days a week. The notables coming into New Haven three to do her show. Name the movie stars, they were all here, that was a fun time to work at the television station. I recall Sammy Davis Jr. in the women’s restroom getting ready for the who and he and I talking, he was a riot. Anyway, we reminisced at her sprawling Queen Anne Manor in Pawling, New York about a time 30 years ago

At the end of 2017, Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce President, Tony Rescigno, will call it quits. The 72-year old Rescigno has served the city in which he was raised for 17 years. He feels good about where he’s leaving the city and hopes to have a hand in hiring the chamber’s next chief. He wants the new person to understand how much the Elm City has to offer. He’s a guy that knows business well, he had his own when he  was just a little boy. There are about 2-thousand members in the chamber and Rescigno would like to see those numbers come up. He told me he has no idea what he will do on day one that he isn’t working, he tells me the job has been a real joy.

On NYBERG we talk to a woman from across the pond who is turning her passion for children and art into quite a business. Her love for children was shaped in part by working as a nanny for a royal family in Switzerland. Hannah Perry, wrote and illustrated a children’s book in 2005, called “Picnics and Puddles, The Adventures of the Giggling Pig and Friends” and that began the world in which she finds herself now.

Fast forward, to 2011 and she establishes her “The Giggling Pig brand. To date, she has two art studios in Shelton and Bethel, Connecticut and plans for more in the state as she is about to franchise. There are plans in the works to open up one in New York and then down the road in her former home in England. Perry’s hard work and determination has caught the eye of Pitney Bowes who came in and helped her set up a shipping system for her art boxes which she says has saved her a lot of money. The sky’s the limit for Perry as she’s just getting started.

A New Milford, Connecticut man got an idea to build a better sand castle and he’s turning that into a business. The lightbulb went off when Kevin Lane was on a vacation with his family in at Laguna Beach, California and “Create A Castle”  was born. Lane has fashioned plastic casings and other items and put them in a kit for the whole family to build showstopping kingdoms in the sand, and you can use them in the winter time too. Create A Castle has also partnered with Mystic Aquarium so a percentage of all sales goes toward the animal rescue program within Connecticut.

Another small business has arrived in Connecticut, this one was established just a month and a half ago, (June 2017) on the shoreline. It’s the Mystic Supply Company where American-made is king. Tomas Gates and Amma Pozzi are giving home-grown small businesses a place to be displayed and sold.  Amma’s portrait and wedding photography business is also housed in the building. This pair doesn’t know the meaning of down time. They admit it’s difficult to find a lot of American-made products, because so many companies have gone out of business…but they’re plugging along just the same in a historic building that has a brand new life. Oh, and by the way you can rent bikes and scooters here too because they saw a need in the town of Mystic, which swells in the summertime with tourists.

This is not your parent’s Shasta trailer. The two owners of “The Mobile Pub” are Marco Marcelo and Thomas Keane. A year and a half ago they decided to deck out a 1962, 14-foot Shasta caravan with a full bar including Connecticut craft beers and haul it around the state for weddings and other events. It’s so popular, they’re buying two 1960’s Shasta’s to head out on the highways.

Women’s Business Development Council in Connecticut, is a non-profit celebrating 20-years of helping women-owned business owners get on their feet and stay successful. Women starting small businesses in the state far outweighs men doing the same thing. Fran Pastore founded the Women’s Business Development Council, and over the 2-decades has helped nearly 20-thousand women, guiding them and holding their hand as they set sail. There are ten full-time employees at WBDC and about 150 volunteers to help women in business. Everything old is new again,that’s the idea behind the business that 22-year old Paul Hunter has built. He’s a junior at Regis University in Denver. His company is called “Repurpose Bowties.” He takes discarded pieces of clothing and gives it new life as a bow tie. People started noticing a bow tie he had made from the remnants of a shirt he burned standing too close to a stove and that gavhttp://WWW.REPUPOSEBOWTIES.COMe way to an idea for a business.  Hunter is an economics and neuroscience major, his dream is to go to graduate school at Yale University. Carla Bartolucci is small in stature but huge in the organic and gluten-free worlds. She is Connecticut’s Small Business Person of 2017. She and her Italian-born husband’s business is called Jovial Foods, it’s based in Stonington. All their products are organic and gluten-free. Her drive to succeed is spurred by loved ones she and her husband lost, and their eldest daughter, who was diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity. One of the secrets she found to helping her daughter, and others, is an ancient grain called einkorn. She is now farming that grain and all her products in Italy. Bartolucci spends much of the year in Italy where she and her husband are raising their children and overseeing manufacturing facilities and organic farmers, but is in Connecticut a lot at her headquarters. Jovial Foods is on a large parcel of land where the now closed historic Randall’s Ordinary Restaurant existed. Here’s an exclusive for you, she’ll be reopening it in amazing fashion in the next few years.

It’s called SiggPay and it’s being rolled out in March, 2018. The founder behind this social media marketing strategy is Brian Fuller of Trumbull, Connecticut. His idea is to pay you, for your posts on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. All of this is centered around helping small businesses in the state. Fuller says a several day online campaign can be as little as 25-dollars for a small business trying to get some traction. So called nano-influencers” can make anywhere from 20 to 200 dollars per campaign. Fuller says he is planning to roll out this digital strategy to neighboring states after its start in Connecticut. A mother, daughter Stamford-based jewelry-making team is all about giving back. Jewels For Hope has been around since 2009.
The company began when Sandy D’Andrea was caring for her ailing mother. She starting making jewelry for the hospice care workers as a way to say thank you for their help, a few years later her daughter Stevie jumped in to help.  The national retailer, J. Crew noticed Jewels For Hope and is partnering with them on February 8th, 2018 at the Stamford Town Center from 4 in the afternoon until 8 p.m. “Jewels” will also be at the celebrity gift lounge at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles in March.

Ogham is the earliest written form of Primitive Irish, the oldest of the Gaelic languages. Ogham was first used in Ireland and parts of England, Scotland and Wales between the 2nd and 6th centuries. Though its actual origins remain a mystery, it’s believed the Celts desired a cryptic alphabet that could not be deciphered by Roman Britain. Represented as a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, this ancient script is thought to be influenced by the Latin alphabet using 20 characters. It is most commonly written vertically and is read from bottom to top. When presented horizontally, it is read from left to right. Ogham was carved into stones and trees to mark land boundaries or to commemorate a member of the community. Today there are roughly 400 surviving stones featuring proper names, ancestral and tribal affiliations, and Latin words.

Keeping it alive for others to learn about is Colleen Berry Conway of Connecticut….yes, she’s Irish. She owns a company called Ogham Art where you to can have you name spelled out in Ogham on prints, stationery, jewelry and other gift items.

The winner of the 2018 Connecticut Small Business Administration best home-based business is Regift The Wrap. It was launched in January of 2018. The creator is Glastonbury, Connecticut’s, Linda Longobardi. She decided to try to put a stop to the practice of wrapping gifts with paper that then gets discarded and ends of in up landfills. She came up with stretchy sleeve which slides on to gifts, no matter what the shape, in a snap. The recipient of the gift can then reuse the material as wrap for another gift. It can be used over, and over, and over again and no tape or scissors needed.

For those of you who follow a vegan diet and have a tough time finding variety when it comes to meals, Guilford, Connecticut’s Three Girls Vegan Creamery might hold some answers. The company is owned by a Mom and her two daughters who eat vegan. In just a few years, the company’s popularity is beyond their expectations. The Washington Post found them writing…”This newcomer from Connecticut ships cashew-based mozzarella pearls, aged grated Parmesan made with almond meal and mustard seeds, and mini French-style soft cheeses studded with edible flowers.” Grocery store chains are contacting them to carry their food and they will be featured in Oprah Winfrey’s Magazine, “O” in October 2018. And as this writing they are waiting to hear back from the popular television show “Shark Tank” to see if they are picked to go on national TV.  All this and they are only open one day a week, on Sundays.

There are just a handful of seaplane companies in America, and one is based in New Haven, Connecticut called, Shoreline Aviation. It was founded nearly 40 years ago by a classically trained Trombone player, who needed to get from here to there quickly for gigs so, John Kelly got his pilot’s license. At first land was his choice from which to take off and land, but 18-years later he decided to go all in on water. The adventures flying his fleet of 10-amphibious Cessna Caravans he would fill a book. Most of their clients are higher end, but they do offer deals out of New Haven’s Tweed-New Haven Airport. They fly in and out of New York City, Fire Island, Provincetown, Florida, the Caribbean, and waterways in between. The company’s mascot is a rubber duck, the name is “Roger Over-And-Out,” I love that.

His Mom and Dad own diners in the Connecticut, so he’s been around the food business his whole life. 21-year old Kostas Sousoulas is a senior at Quinnipiac University but already has his own business with help from the school, called Yimello Smoothies. He has a food truck which serves these all natural fruit concoctions and just last week, (September 2018) the frozen fruit packets went into all but a handful of Big Y grocery stores. This 21-year-old from Branford, Connecticut is well on his way.

October is American cheese month, yes indeed it is, and to celebrate on NYBERG I talked to two “cheesemongers.” A cheesemonger is one who sells cheese. Laura Downey and Chris Palumbo, previously who worked in retail and catering, they decided they had the skills to open up the Fairfield Cheese Company in 2009 and then the Greenwich Cheese Company in 2014. It’s going so well they expanded in 2017 and created Cheesemonger Box where you can subscribe and get their handmade American and European artisanal cheeses from small farms in sent right to your house. So far Cheesemonger Box has 500 subscribers across the country.
