70 Years of Bigelow Tea in Connecticut

The Bigelow Tea Company of Fairfield, Connecticut is top drawer. For three generations it has stood the test of tea time and is winning. The Network Connecticut team went on a recent tour of its headquarters and had lunch with its CEO, Cindi Bigelow. She is vivacious, and “gets it done” for the people who work for her and the company. The thing that is so prevalent about Bigelow is that they care about their community and the people who work for them. We saw that for ourselves as we toured the plant. Folks on staff have worked for them for decades. To say that this company is philanthropic is an understatement, they give back to charity after charity after charity. That is the way to do business. Bigelow is there for others. What drew me to them in the first place? “Constant Comment” tea. I grew up with that in Indiana, it’s the only tea we had in our home.00105

Constant Comment tea is the foundation of this company. Cindi Bigelow’s Grandmother whipped up a batch of this tea, and to this day 70 years later ,it is the same formula. Take a look at the family history on their website. They are kind, and caring and we are lucky to have them in the state of Connecticut.

Berkshire Adirondack is a Connecticut Manufacturer of custom outdoor Cedar furniture, including benches, tables and their signature Adirondack Chairs. Always adding to our line from our customers ideas. Proud to be a Connecticut small business.

Read about the rich history of how their products are made:

In 1865 a lake was formed in Western Massachusetts  from the flooding of three bodies of water, Rand pond, Little pond and Messenger Ponds in 1865, by a dam across the Fall River,[3] a tributary of the Farmington River created by the Farmington River Power Company. It was used for water storage, ensuring a steady supply of water power for mills along the Farmington River. In the early part of the twentieth century, the rise of the automobile led to the development of many seasonal cottages along the lake shore.  In 1918 the Dam was expanded and Shaw’s Pond was flooded over adding an additional 80 acres to what is now known as Otis Reservoir.

In 2010-2011 during the replacement of the original 1865 dam and the construction of a new dam and spillway dropped the water level of the reservoir to expose a shoreline that had not seen open air since before 1918.  Along the old shoreline local residence came upon an old natural stone fire-pit and 2 Cedar Adirondack Chairs, one had succumb to the ravages of time but the second chair was in relatively good shape.  The group dug the old chair out of its muddy tomb and cleaned it of the sediment.  One of the men took it upon himself to disassemble the chair and rebuild it with modern stainless steel fasteners and stained the wood to protect it from the elements.  The original chair sits near the waterfront on Driftwood Shores Community Beach not far from its last resting place, and sees regular use every summer.

Before the chair was reassembled, a set of templates was produced from the original chair and several attempts were made to try to duplicate the chairs comfort, support and classic design but all efforts failed…Until today, The classic 100 year design has been resurrected and can now be part of your outdoor collection through Berkshire Adirondack Chairs.

Have you been to Saybrook Country Barn and their shoppes in Old Saybrook, Connecticut? It’s sprawling. You name it you’ll find it, furniture, drapery, gifts and clothing and on and on and on. There is even a restaurant on site called Aspen.

Screen Shot 2015-12-08 at 1.49.01 PM

This is a family business that has grown because it has evolved over the years. It’s at the head of Main Street in this Connecticut River Valley town. Network Connecticut is proud to welcome them aboard as a sponsor as we continue our march to network and connect, business and innovators and entrepreneurs across the Constitution state called Connecticut. If everybody works together things get done and people prosper. The Saybrook Country Barn has been a mainstay in Connecticut for nearly 40-years. It still is known as one of the leading premium furniture stores. Along with 42,000 square feet of interior design services and furniture and men’s and women’s clothing and gifts and rugs and window treatments and rugs there is also a hardware department there…beat that with a stick. Right before the Christmas of 2014, I finally got around to re doing my oldest daughter’s bedroom following her marriage and moving out of the house. I went over to the “barn” found the whole “kit and caboodle” (bed, lamps and chest of drawers) on the floor of the place, bought it and got it delivered just in time to celebrate the holiday, so there you go! Customer service! And so, another story of a business in Connecticut making it work thru think and thin.

Life moves fast and stores and restaurants open and close on a dime. This awesome-looking brick building in Guilford, Connecticut was brought to my attention recently. It has been many things, a restaurant, a bagel shop and on and on. But now this historic building, put up in 1894, is the home of a brand new co-working space. The brainchild of Christian Brachvogel. Because building a new business is expensive, these kinds of places have sprung up all over Connecticut to help those toiling away on the next new thing in an inexpensive way. And everyone doing that is under the same roof. It’s that old safety-in-numbers adage kind-of-thing. Take a look at it. Good luck to all of you who are out there trying to build a better Connecticut, I’m with you!old-fellows-300x300

This is the digital home of Guilford Coworking, a managed community office located at 14 Water Street, Guilford, CT 06437. You can reach us at christian@guilfordcoworking.com or 917 428 5905. Conceived as a sanctuary for the productive mind, our open-plan work space will give you the environment, tools and community to do what you do best… better. Membership starts at $195/month, and day passes run $20.
